Fellowship Program - Teaching

Trainees serve as junior attending physicians on the Have questions? Click here!inpatient units under the supervision of senior faculty. Fellows acquire teaching and presentation skills as primary lecturers and facilitators for Oncology Journal Club, the weekly Patient Clinical Presentation and for Hematology Clinical Conference.

A specialized 8-bed Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, with a full complement of 18 Oncology nurses, is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Division (VA Hospital), a 350-bed general hospital and major teaching affiliate at The University of Texas Health Science Center. A decentralized clinical pharmacy provides a broad range of pharmaceutical, nutritional, and investigational services to the unit. An 11-bed Hematology/ Oncology Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit is also located at University Hospital, a 550-bed general hospital and teaching facility on the campus of the Health Science Center.

Outpatient experience in the management of patients with malignant diseases is obtained in the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC), located 1-1/2 blocks from The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA). Both the Clinical Medical Oncology and Hematology sections hold outpatient clinics at the CTRC for private and University Health System patients. The CTRC provides the opportunity for day-to-day multidisciplinary consultation among radio-therapists, medical oncologists, pediatric oncologists, surgical oncologists, and hematologists. Additional outpatient clinics in both Hematology and Medical Oncology are held at the VA Hospital and at the University Health Center Downtown. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, and their affiliated hospitals comprise the San Antonio Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center.
