We have a strong basic and clinical research program with successful investigators to serve as mentors for our trainees. Areas of particular strength include: solid tumor and leukemia stem cell biology; surface membrane, biochemical, and enzyme markers of leukemia cells; drug treatment of gastrointestinal malignancy, new anticancer drug development; autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation; basic and clinical aspects of iron-regulated processes; molecular studies of growth factors, oncogenes, and tumor suppressor genes; Have questions? To complement laboratory or clinical research, we offer formal instruction for all fellows in techniques in clinical research and in basic science laboratory technology, the scientific and statistical appraisal of medical reports, medical writing, and grant proposal preparation.

In addition to the above listed research activities in the divisions of Hematology and Medical Oncology, we encourage fellows to seek laboratory research experience in one of the many productive groups studying basic and clinical cancer biology in other departments of the university. Superior research opportunities exist within the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Research of Aging, the UT Institute of Biotechnology/Molecular Medicine, the Children's Cancer Research Institute, among many others.

In addition to the significant and expanding basic research interests of our facility, the clinical research endeavors of our faculty have continued to remain at the forefront of cancer therapeutics. UTHSCSA and the CTRC have been awarded National Cancer Institute designation as a Clinical Cancer Center, now in its 12th year. The clinical cancer center unifies the research endeavors of its many investigators and broadens the research opportunities available to our fellows including programs at the Institute for Biotechnology, the Institute for Drug Development, and other departments and divisions of the center.

Similarly, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has been selected by the National Cancer Institute as one of a select group of institutions to perform Phase I trials of new agents for the treatment of cancer. Dr. Eric Rowinsky and Dr. Anthony Tolcher direct these studies. The Operations Office of the Southwest Oncology Group is located in San Antonio and is headed by Dr. Charles Coltman. As the largest clinical cooperative oncology group in the country, this organization is an outstanding resource for learning about clinical trials methodology. Group studies are performed at the UTHSCSA, which serves as a member institution of the Group. Fellows are encouraged to enroll all eligible patients on Group studies as first-line cancer treatment.

Research mentors may also be selected from faculty of other departments where state-of-the-art basic oncology research is being conducted.
