Fellowship Program - Patient Care
The patient is the center of our universe, and we
emphasize strong clinical skills, attention to detail, and the
development of outstanding communication skills and professionalism as
we care for people with blood disorders and cancer. Patient care spans
the spectrum of prevention, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and
effective palliative care and end-of-life care. We strongly support
clinical trials as the best option for quality care of patients with
cancer and hematologic disorders. The clinical experience will include
general inpatient and outpatient consultations on oncologic and
hematologic problems, and specialized experience in the management of
intensively treated, critically ill cancer patients on inpatient
oncology and hematology units.
A specialized 8-bed Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit, with a full complement of 18 Oncology nurses, is located at the Department of Veterans Affairs, South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Division (VA Hospital), a 350-bed general hospital and major teaching affiliate at The University of Texas Health Science Center. A decentralized clinical pharmacy provides a broad range of pharmaceutical, nutritional, and investigational services to the unit. An 11-bed Hematology/ Oncology Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit is also located at University Hospital, a 550-bed general hospital and teaching facility on the campus of the Health Science Center. Outpatient experience in the management of patients with malignant diseases is obtained in the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC), located 1-1/2 blocks from The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSCSA). Both the Clinical Medical Oncology and Hematology sections hold outpatient clinics at the CTRC for private and University Health System patients. The CTRC provides the opportunity for day-to-day multidisciplinary consultation among radio-therapists, medical oncologists, pediatric oncologists, surgical oncologists, and hematologists. Additional outpatient clinics in both Hematology and Medical Oncology are held at the VA Hospital and at the University Health Center Downtown. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, and their affiliated hospitals comprise the San Antonio Cancer Institute, an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center.
