During the first year, the fellow's time is divided among the inpatient and outpatient services of the Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology. The inpatient services are titled Medical Oncology Consultation, Hematology Consultation, and Hematology Critical Care. In the inpatient setting, the fellow supervises the units that are staffed Have questions? Click here!by junior medical students, interns, and an attending physician. The fellow acts as a consultant to the housestaff and serves as the primary contact person to housestaff for our clinical research programs. As well, the fellow learns the art and science of being a consultant to other services within the Health Science Center. In addition, fellows are assigned several months elective time for pursuit of clinical experiences in other allied oncology programs (e.g., surgical oncology, radiation oncology, anatomic pathology, etc.).

We have an active bone marrow transplantation program. Allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplants are performed for a wide range of diseases including hematologic malignancies and solid tumors at the VA Hospital and University Hospital. The VA Hospital is one of only three bone marrow transplant programs of the Department of Veterans Affairs and gets patient referrals from all over the United States. Bone marrow research opportunities include participation in Phase I, II and III investigational protocols in the areas of hematopoietic growth factors, supportive care, and drug development. Fellows can elect to do additional training in bone marrow transplantation during their second year of fellowship.

In addition to staffing inpatient services devoted to care of patients with hematologic malignancy, bone marrow transplantation and other acute hematologic diseases, members of the Hematology Division serve as consultants to other services. Patients have a variety of disorders including an array of hematologic malignancies, anemias, white cell and platelet disorders, and coagulation problems.

Experience in both basic and clinical research in Medical Oncology/Hematology is available for trainees. Fellows in our training program have a large number of varied research opportunities available to them that will prepare them for research careers in academic medical oncology/ hematology. Facilities and guidance are available for trainees to participate in and contribute to developments at the cutting edge of both basic and clinical research.
