Have questions? Click here!Brief descriptions of fellowship faculty research interests are included below. Further details on cancer research at UTHSCSA, including more extensive research descriptions and bibliographies, can be found at the searchable faculty research web page at Faculty Research Profiles.

Dr. David Boldt's major research interest is in leukemia biology. His laboratory is studying regulation of gene transcription by iron and heme. A second independent area of research in Dr. Boldt's laboratory focuses on biological correlates of adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Dr. Yair Gazitt's laboratory studies regulation of cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis by p53 and bcl-2, basic science and clinical applications for multiple myeloma, and the biology and clinical applications of stem cell mobilization.

Dr. César O. Freytes is interested in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as therapy of hematologic malignancies and breast cancer, as well as experimental chemotherapy and supportive care aspects in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Dr. David Essex's research interest is in coagulation. His specific focus has been a platelet enzyme, protein disulfide isomerase, and it's role in platelet function.

Dr. David Haile's broad area of interest is in eukaryotic iron metabolism. The laboratory is currently studying the genetic regulation and function of MTP1, a novel iron transporter which they have cloned.

Dr. Morgan McLemore's major research interest is in myelopoiesis. The laboratory utilizes mice with targeted mutations of their Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Receptors and various signaling molecules to better understand the molecular regulation of myelopoiesis.

Dr. Leonel Ochoa is a member of the Hematology division since February 2004. He is interested in drug development on hematologic malignancies.

Dr. Anand B. Karnad is the Director of the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program.

Dr. Geoffrey Weiss is a member of the drug development team and is Principal Investigator for the institutional Southwest Oncology Group grant. Dr. Weiss maintains a clinical research program investing immunotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of malignant melanoma and renal cell carcinoma. As a long time member of the Cytokine Working Group, Dr. Weiss has had the privilege of developing some of the current most effective therapies for these diseases.

Dr. Muralidhar Beeram is interested in the clinical management of breast cancer and is developing a translational research program examining the interaction of small molecule therapies and estrogen receptor antagonists in breast cancer treatment.

Dr. Anthony Tolcher is Director of Clinical Investigations of the Phase I Drug Development Team of the Institute for Drug Development, CTRC. He is interested in the clinical investigation of advanced prostate cancer.

Dr. Chris Takimoto's research is in the pharmacology and pharmacoegenomics of drug design particularly in the preclinical and Phase I testing of drugs for the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. In addition, Dr. Takimoto is investigating the pharmacokinetic behavior of new anticancer agents in patients with major organ dysfunction.

Dr. Robert Marciniak's research interests include the molecular biology of aging and cancer. Current work focuses on the molecular analysis of telomerase-independent telomere maintenance mechanisms in sarcomas.
