Critical Care Hematology Service

The Critical Care Hematology Service Team manages bone marrow transplant recipients and donors, as well as patients with acute leukemia, aplastic anemia and any other hematologic disorder requiring intensive support. In addition, the Critical Care Hematology team manage all patients participating in clinical trials including local investigator initiated trials, multicenter studies as well as Southwest Oncology Group studies, independently of the patient's diagnosis. The Critical Care Hematology team  manage patients both at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital and University Hospital.  Outpatient care is an integral part of the Critical Care Hematology Team. This responds to the fact that many of the patients discharged from the hospital require close follow up. Routinely, allogeneic transplant patients require close medical follow up to identify complications early such as graft versushost disease, to monitor the need of blood product transfusion and to monitor drug levels such as cyclosporine.

The Critical Care Hematology Team consists of an attending physician, a first year hematology oncology fellow, a second or third year medical resident, two physician assistants and 4th year medical students on elective rotations. At the VA , a pharmacy resident and a staff pharmacy doctor complete the Critical Care Hematology Team.
