The Hematology Division faculty members provide clinical expertise in the areas of bone marrow transplantation, hematologic malignancies, blood coagulation, and classical hematology, as well as research expertise in areas as diverse as molecular and cellular biology and clinical bone marrow transplantation protocols. The Division presently provides staffing for inpatient Hematology/Bone Marrow transplant services at both the University Hospital and Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital and for Hematology consultations at both UH and VA Hospitals as well as four outpatient clinics per week. Seventy bone marrow transplants were performed in FY 2000, and there were approximately 6,000 outpatient visits. The Audie Murphy VA Bone Marrow Transplant Program is one of only three national referral centers for stem cell transplantation and receives patients from throughout the U.S. Clinical research in the BMT Section focuses in the area of hematologic malignancies, especially multiple myeloma and lymphoma, and supportive care issues. In addition, the Division is charged with teaching basic and clinical Hematology to medical students, Internal Medicine residents, and Hematology/Medical Oncology fellows. We have a joint T32 training grant for fellows with the Medical Oncology Division and also share with them a K12 physician scientist training grant. Major research programs in the division include the following: hematopoietic stem cells, growth factors, regulation of gene expression, molecular aspects of iron homeostasis, coagulation factor biochemistry, leukemia biology, multiple myeloma biology, and bone marrow transplantation including both clinical and laboratory aspects.
